Environmental Compliance & Industrial Hygiene

Of all the units in EH&S, Environmental Compliance and Industrial Hygiene (ECIH) is the most multifaceted. There is no area of campus which has not been affected by the work of the ECIH unit. The CU Boulder campus can be likened to a small city, and it has similar environmental concerns to address. The campus includes a large number of people working inside of a relatively small area that includes numerous buildings. However, the campus also has some complex research operations being performed that are not seen in small cities and that’s what makes the job for the ECIH unit so unique and challenging.

The unit maintains numerous regulatory permits designed to protect our environment in which we live and work. The ECIH unit supports healthy workplaces by investigating indoor air quality problems and by performing exposure assessments.

Another area of specialization for ECIH is industrial hygiene. Industrial hygiene is the science of anticipating, recognizing, evaluating, and controlling workplace conditions that may cause workers’ injury or illness. The most common areas of concern from faculty and staff members involving industrial hygiene are odor, noise and lead exposure issues.
