U.S. EPA’s Sector Strategies Program has selected the Colleges
and Universities sector as one of eight new sector partners to develop
sector-specific approaches to assist colleges and universities in
the use of environmental management systems, reducing regulatory performance
barriers, and measuring environmental progress.
Three working groups were formed to tailor efforts on these priority
areas of the sector initiative: Environmental Management Systems (EMSs),
Performance Measurement, and Regulatory Innovations.
The Performance Measurement work group is currently exploring creative
ways to measure sector-wide environmental and economic progress. Currently,
the work group is collecting data for: energy use, greenhouse gas
emissions, hazardous waste, solid waste/recycling, and water use as
key environmental performance indicators.
Examples of performance measurement tools are displayed here.
