Fire Plan

Environmental Health and Safety Center

 

This procedure applies to all employees, student employees, and visitors in the Environmental Health & Safety Center and facility, 1000 Regent Drive.

 

If you find a fire in progress:

·        Pull the nearest fire alarm.  First floor alarms are located next to each exit; second floor alarms are located at the top of the front stairs and at the rear exit.

·        Leave the building using the nearest safe exit route.  Do not use any elevators.  First floor exits include the front lobby, Parking Services door and garage entry, rear exit, Radiation Safety exits and Hazardous Waste exits; second floor exits are front stairway and rear door.  Get to safety.  Call 9-1-1 and clearly state the location of the fire - if in the Environmental Health & Safety Center that is 1000 Regent Drive.

·        Close – but do not lock - any doors behind you.

·        Move immediately to the EH&S assembly area on the traffic island at the base of the light pole due west of the front door and directly across from the covered stairwell for the parking garage.  The senior member of the administrative staff will take role to determine personnel status.  Remain there until dismissed by your supervisor or instructed to move elsewhere by emergency personnel.

·        Do not re-enter the facility until directed to do so by a supervisor or the Fire Marshal.

 

If the fire alarm sounds:

·        Leave the building using the nearest safe exit route.  Do not use any elevators.

·        Close – but do not lock - any doors behind you.

·        Move immediately to the EH&S assembly area on the traffic island at the base of the light pole due west of the front door and directly across from the covered stairwell for the parking garage.  Remain there until dismissed by your supervisor or instructed to move elsewhere by emergency personnel.

·        Do not re-enter the building until directed to do so by a supervisor or the Fire Marshal.

 

Special instructions:

·        Shut down any experiments procedures or procedures which should not be left unattended.  Extinguish any open flames, shut off any noxious or flammable gas supplies. 

·        Do not waste time turning off computer systems or other office machinery.

·        The primary exit for personnel in wheelchairs on the first floor is the front door; primary exit for personnel in wheelchairs on the second floor is the rear door.  Due to the confined hallways and restricted wheelchair access in the facility, staff will note any visitors using wheelchairs.
