tornado
Plan
Environmental Health and Safety Center
This procedure applies to all employees, student
employees, and visitors in the EH&S offices located in the Stadium.
General terms:
Tornado
Watch - issued when severe thunderstorms and / or tornadoes
are most likely to occur. Watches
usually cover large geographic areas for periods up to six hours. If a tornado watch is issued for your area,
continue to monitor information sources. Tornado watches are issued by the
National Weather Service and relayed by local media.
Tornado
Warning - tornadoes are indicated by radar or trained spotters.
The
ACTIONS:
The following instructions should be followed if you hear
a tornado warning or see a tornado
approaching.
If
indoors:
·
Get away from windows / doors leading
outside. One of the greatest dangers
during a tornado is flying debris.
·
If available, immediately seek shelter in a
basement or designated storm shelter.
·
In buildings without a basement, seek shelter in
an interior room under heavy furniture (table, desk).
·
Avoid any wide span roof areas such as
auditoriums, gymnasiums, cafeterias, and large hallways.
·
If in the Stadium EH&S offices, seek shelter
in the equipment room or the hallway between the copy room and the stairwell.
·
Remain in shelter until the all clear has been
sounded.
If
outdoors:
·
If at all possible, seek shelter in the nearest
building immediately.
·
If caught away from any buildings, seek shelter in
the nearest ditch or low area.
·
If in a vehicle, do not attempt to outrun a
tornado. Stop and seek shelter in the
nearest ditch or low area.
Special
instructions:
·
If a tornado touches down severe damage will
result including downed power lines, fractured gas lines, and broken water
pipes. Be cautious in any area hit by a
tornado for these hazards.
·
Additionally, heavy hail and rainfall often
accompany tornadoes. Hail damage and
flash flooding are definite risks following a tornado.
